Apple had to buy the right to use the Llightning port title from Harley-Davidson

Apple’s new Lightning connector was a subject of controversy when it got introduced with the iPhone 5, citing additional adapters needed for compatibility with older accessories.

The company had to finally overhaul its kludgie 30-pin connector, though, and the new Lightning port is not only much smaller, but it is side-agnostic, i.e. it doesn’t matter how you plug the cable in, it will work either way.

The compact port offers blazing fast transfers, too, hence the “Lightning” moniker, but it seems that Apple ran into the name being patented by none other than Harley-Davidson, and covering a universe of gear, too, so it had to dole out some cash to the motorcycle company, and licence the term for a commercial title of its new connector type.

In any case, the transfer of partial access to the term is official as of Saturday, and Apple can knock itself out calling the new compact port on its mobile devices Lightning, while Harleys can still be called so too – a win-win situation if there’s ever one.
