iPhone sales could reach 200 million over the next year

iPhone sales could reach 200 million over the next year

Despite Apple’s mixed results at the company’s earnings call last week (record profit, yet missed targets), and dramatic shift with its board of directors, the iPhone 5 is forecast to set new sales records for fiscal year 2013 which has just begun.

The iPhone 5 has already had a stellar sales debut, with more than 5 million sold during the first weekend. For what was left of the financial quarter, an additional 27 million iPhones were sold. Michael Walkley, an analyst with Canaccord Genuity, believes that Apple will move 194 million handsets for this fiscal year, achieving quarterly sales goals that will shatter last year’s sales. The holiday quarter of 2011 was Apple’s strongest period, selling 37 million iPhones. For FY2013, sales are expected to reach 48.5 million.

In comparison, Samsung will likely move over 300 million handsets, but take into account that Samsung manufacturers a wide array of products whereas, Apple essentially makes one, plus a lower volume of legacy iPhones. iPad sales will be helped by the new iPad mini, with overall sales possibly topping 100 million units in the coming year.

Between the two giants, they are squaring off in a market by selling multiple-millions of devices each day around the world. That is not too bad for a day’s work.

LG Nexus 4 wont support T Mobiles Wi Fi calling

LG Nexus 4 won't support T-Mobile's Wi-Fi calling

No support for Wi-Fi calling on the LG Nexus 4

No support for Wi-Fi calling on the LG Nexus 4

If any of you T-Mobile customers out there were planning on using Wi-Fi calling on the upcoming LG Nexus 4, the sad truth is that the device will not be supporting the feature. It is not like Korean based LG has anything against you making calls using Wi-Fi, or hates T-Mobile. It is just that Nexus phones are developed without much input from the carriers. None of the other Nexus handsets supported the feature and that won’t change for the next Nexus phone even if the handset is available directly from the nation’s fourth largest carrier.

Not having Wi-Fi calling means you miss out on a feature that can save you battery life and offer you loud and clear phone conversations. But adding a feature associated with an individual carrier would seem to go against the idea behind the Nexus program anyway. We’re not sure if the lack of Wi-Fi calling is actually going to stop a T-Mobile customer from picking up the device. Besides, without an LTE radio, and with support for T-Mobile’s blazing fast HSPA+42 pipeline, there is another good reason for T-Mobile customers to pick up the LG Nexus 4.

The LG Nexus 4 is expected to launch November 13th in the Google Play Store priced at $299 for the 8GB version and $349 for the 16GB model. It will launch later next month at T-Mobile for $199 with a signed two-year pact.

Verizon customers can enjoy carrier billing with Google Play Store purchases

Verizon customers can enjoy carrier billing with Google Play Store purchases

The most expensive app in the Google Play Store

The most expensive app in the Google Play Store

Verizon’s customers using an Android flavored phone can now make purchases from the Google Play Store and have the charges added to their monthly Verizon bill. While “carrier billing” has been around since the time dinosaurs ruled the earth, it is now just coming to the nation’s largest carrier. This is actually a boon for developers because “out of sight, out of mind” means that you can thumb through the Play Store, find a premium app you want to buy, and make the purchase knowing that your Verizon bill won’t come in the mail for another few weeks. If every Verizon customer with an Android smartphone thought this way, it would add up to more money in developers’ coffers.

Just in case you have a kid that you think just might take advantage of the situation, a PIN number could be set up for the other phones on your account. Peer pressure being what it is today, your kid might be dared into buying the most expensive app in the store, the $200 gold dice that are nothing but a status symbol that appears on your phone. And if that isn’t enough protection for you, Verizon will allow you to opt out of carrier billing by using your MyVerizon account to leave the program.

Not all Android users on Verizon will get carrier billing at the same time, so be patient. Pretty soon you will be able to impulse buy your way through the Google Play Store just like AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile customers have been able to do.

AT T is seeking more 700MHz spectrum

AT&T is seeking more 700MHz spectrum

America’s second largest carrier filed a request with the FCC to buy spectrum from Broadband Wireless Unlimited, LLC. In a public notice released today by the FCC, AT&T is seeking to acquire nine Lower 700MHz Band B Block licenses from Broadband Unlimited.

AT&T intends to use the spectrum to increase its LTE capacity across nine markets (Cellular Market Areas or CMAs) in Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana Massachusetts, New York, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia. The notice does not state which specific markets are within these licensed areas. In all, AT&T would hold 70-125MHz of spectrum in those markets. It looks as though the FCC is ready to give this transaction the green light unless “petitions to deny” are submitted by November 14th.

Since AT&T had to give up spectrum and cash to T-Mobile USA after its failed merger attempt, this spectrum will certainly help the carrier expand its footprint as it rolls out LTE services. Assuming the deal goes through, hopefully that means better service for AT&Ts customers in the near-term.

Amazon mistake: Apple iPad mini has stereo speakers

The back and forth emails that ended with Schiller's response

The back and forth emails that ended with Schiller’s response

It has been thought that Apple launched the Apple iPad mini to compete against the low-priced 7 inch Android models which includes the Amazon Kindle Fire HD. Feeling some of that competition, Amazon earlier this week posted on its web site a comparison chart as part of its “much more for much less” campaign, showing features on the Amazon Kindle Fire HD that are not on Apple’s 7.9 inch tablet. The online retailer boasts of the HD display on its slate vs. what it calls a “low-resolution display” on the iPad mini. The pixel density seems to prove this as the Amazon tablet has a 216ppi pixel density vs. 163ppi for the Apple iPad mini.

Amazon also noted how its tablet has dual stereo speakers versus the mono speakers on the smaller sized Apple tablet. But Amazon might not have done its homework here. An email sent from Apple’s senior vp of worldwide marketing, Phil Schiller, reveals that the Apple iPad mini does indeed have stereo speakers. Perhaps the blame can’t be placed right at Amazon’s feet after all considering that the product page on Apple’s website merely says that the “mini” has a built-in speaker.

To set things straight, Apple needs to update the Apple iPad mini product page to reflect the stereo speakers, and Amazon needs to either correct its comparison chart or remove it in a timely fashion. The online retailer just might want to keep it up after fixing the incorrect line about the mono speaker on the iPad mini because after all, it does strike at one major criticism of the 7.9 inch iOS tablet, the 1024 x 768 resolution on the screen.

Company with one patent to its name sues Apple over FaceTime and more

Company with one patent to its name sues Apple over FaceTime and more

The problem with business in America these days is that owning a patent is looked at as holding a lottery ticket by many patent trolls firms. Take Intercarrier Communications, out of Texas. With an intellectual property portfolio consisting of one patent for something that they didn’t even invent, ICC is taking a number of major corporations to court including Apple. The patent was granted in 2006 for “an inter-carrier messaging service providing phone number only experience,” and was assigned to ICC just for the express purpose of filing the law suit against Apple and the other firms.

Speaking of the other firms, the list of defendants includes Apple, Broadsoft, Inerop Technologies, Iris Wireles, Mobiweb and others. The suit was filed in eastern Virginia district court and Judge John A. Gibney will be presiding. As one of the most valuable companies in the world, and with more money in the vault than Scrooge McDuck, Apple is a natural target for patent trolls like ICC. The latter claims that Apple’s FaceTime infringes on its ’748 patent.

Will Apple pay ICC to go away? Somehow, we doubt it. Paying off ICC would invite every patent troll in the world to line up for a big pay day. For the legally inclined, you can read the lawsuit below.

MetroPCS announces joyn a new standards based communication service

MetroPCS announces “joyn” a new standards based communication service

The fifth largest carrier in the US is continuing to enhance its offerings while people work out the deal to merge with T-Mobile USA. MetroPCS announced “joyn,” which is a messaging, video chat, content sharing and synchronizing serve based on the Rich Communications Services (RCS) standard administered by the GSM Association which oversees the LTE mobile standard.

As a part of all 4G LTE rate plans, and enabled smartphones, joyn by MetroPCS will provide customers the ability to share contact information and status, content, as well as participated in “enhanced” chat which allows for group messaging and provides notifications of read messages. The standard also allows for Wi-Fi and video calling, which may be a handy alternative to FaceTime.

Much like Google Talk, this feature will allow your contacts to see your status if you are available to chat or not.  The service will allow for location sharing as well, and the exchange of content while on a call or during a chat.

The goal is to allows these features be shared by customers no matter what device or OS they are using, but for now, joyn is available only on the Samsung Attain 4G. Of course, MetroPCS will be offering additional RCS compatible devices through the rest of this year and 2013.

BlackBerry 10 is in carrier testing

BlackBerry 10 is in carrier testing

On the way to a Q1 launch of BlackBerry 10, the Canadian based manufacturer says it has begun carrier testing of the OS. Currently, it has reached lab-entry with over 50 carriers. The BlackBerry 10 OS is RIM’s last chance to keep the BlackBerry name relevant in the world of smartphones. At one time, BlackBerry was the top platform in the states, but the company was slow to respond to the changes in the industry brought on by the launch of the OG Apple iPhone.

Besides working on BlackBerry 10 models with a full touch screen and models with the iconic BlackBerry QWERTY keyboard, the company is said to be developing a phone called the BlackBerry Aristo. In Greek, Aristo means “the best” and this model could very well be the new flagship ‘Berry equipped with a 4.65 inch screen offering resolution of 720 x 1280. The quad-core 1.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 is expected under the hood along with 2GB of RAM. The 8.85mm thick model is being built so that BlackBerry can have a high-end device that can compete with the Samsung Galaxy S III,  LG Optimus G and the Apple iPhone.

Nokia releases its promo video for the Lumia 822 coming to Verizon

Nokia releases its promo video for the Lumia 822 coming to Verizon

No doubt that Windows Phone 8 is riding a bit of a wave now that it is officially announced and we are potentially days away from seeing devices hit the streets.

Some Verizon customers were disappointed when AT&T scored the Lumia 920 as an exclusive offering. However, Verizon folks that are aching for the 920 need not be so disappointed in the Lumia 822. First, it is Nokia’s first smartphone for Big Red, and first phone with the carrier in several years. Second, while the 920 has its camera going for it, the Lumia 822 has all the other Nokia features that people will find appealing, like Nokia Drive, Nokia Maps, and City Lens.

What’s more, the 822 will have 16GB of storage, plus microSD support up to 64GB. Throw in the free 7GB of storage everyone gets with SkyDrive and you will have more than enough space to handle thousands of audio tracks, dozens of movies or other videos, and photos of you from the day you were born to yesterday’s barbecue. There are other specifications that others may pick apart in comparison, but at the core, the 822 and 920 are running on the same guts.

For the price point, this is certain to be a hot seller for Verizon. Now that we have been able to see the device up close, we are looking forward to putting one through its paces and getting a review put together for you.

In the meantime, Verizon customers do have something to look forward to with the Lumia 822.

Apple says it would pay 1 per Apple iPhone to Motorola to license FRAND patents

Apple says it would pay $1 per Apple iPhone to Motorola to license FRAND patents

Apple’s attorneys told the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Wisconsin that it would be willing to pay $1 per Apple iPhone to Motorola Mobility for the rights to certain standards-essential patents. But Apple’s legal team warned that if the court sets a FRAND rate of over $1 for the patents, it will appeal the decision and fight using all options open to it. Apple’s offer came after Motorola filed a motion for clarification and comes just five days before a trial is supposed to begin.

Apple said it would pay $1 per Apple iPhone to Motorola Mobility

Apple said it would pay $1 per Apple iPhone to Motorola Mobility

With Microsoft about to go to trial on November 13th over FRAND patents, that company said it would agree to pay court-ordered terms to license standards-essential patents. Apple might have wanted to go on record as showing a willingness to settle the case with Motorola before possibly getting locked into a precedent based on what the court rules in the Microsoft case. Apple might also feel that it is dealing from strength in this case since Motorola Mobility’s own expert witness can’t testify to an appropriate licensing fee. Additionally, most pre-trial rulings have been resolved in Apple’s favor.

Apple added that at next week’s trial that it will use expert testimony and “copious real-world evidence” which includes “Motorola’s other licenses which Apple says will point to a ceiling for how much Motorola can charge Apple for its FRAND patents. Apple also responded to a Motorola Mobility request for the Wisconsin court to allow a German court hearing a similar case to set a separate FRAND rate for Germany. Apple responded that since the Wisconsin case pre-dates the one in Germany, any rate that the Wisconsin court decides on should cover world-wide licensing terms.

Video More early alpha developments for Open webOS

Video: More early alpha developments for Open webOS

We have been presented with some pretty impressive advancements regarding Open webOS within a short period of time since the HP officially released the OS as open source. Almost immediately, we saw a successful port of Open webOS to a Galaxy Nexus device.

Shortly thereafter, we were greeted with ports running on a Nook Color tablet and a Samsung Series 7 Slate.  It is neat that there are a number of developers out there looking to keep webOS viable across a variety of platforms. Even LG is reportedly planning on building its next generation smart TV using Open webOS.

With the early ports of Open webOS, it was clear that the developers involved first wanted to see how it would turn out just getting the equipment to turn on. The OS was not optimized in any way to work how we would expect a smartphone or tablet to behave. The guys over at webOS Nation took a gander at porting the latest modifications of the alpha-build from WebOS Ports, and wanted to see how the on-screen keyboard would behave. The keyboard is not just a shrunken keyboard taken from the TouchPad, but that was part of the source.

Compared to what we saw a month ago, this keyboard looks almost usable. In fact, WebOS Ports has brought to life much of what people liked in webOS in the first place. As you check out the video below, and perhaps dig back into some of the linked stories above, remember that it looks all but certain we will see mobile devices powered by webOS in the future. However, there is still quite a bit of work to do, such as enabling the device to be booted without it being hooked up to an Ubuntu computer. There is no denying though how rapid the progress has been in this open-sourced environment.

Verizon support pages confirms HTC DROID DNA name before its announced

Verizon support pages confirms HTC DROID DNA name before it's announced

We’ve been seeing quite a lot about the monster 1080p phablet that HTC is set to unleash on Verizon customers (and possibly Google Play customers with a Nexus variant). We’ve seen several suggested names, including a recent Minimum Advertised Price (MAP) announcement that referred to the device as the HTC DROID DNA. MAP announcements aren’t always final (and are often circulated by third party resellers), but now Verizon’s own customer service pages have outed the device. While that’s not an official announcement, it seems pretty darn close given that Verizon is apparently entering the DROID DNA into its own computer systems.

You can check out a screen grab below, or check out the source link to see it yourself:

AT T and T Mobile team up to serve customers affected by Sandy

AT&T and T-Mobile team up to serve customers affected by Sandy

Hurricane Sandy inflicted damage on New York and New Jersey

Hurricane Sandy inflicted damage on New York and New Jersey

They were almost bound together by a merger, but now AT&T and T-Mobile are coming together out of necessity. In the New York-New Jersey area, where Hurricane Sandy did her thing, communication by cellular service remains difficult. AT&T and T-Mobile have agreed to allow whichever of the two carriers is operational in certain areas, to carry calls made by customers of the other company without any additional charges. Even if a customer’s phone indicates that they are on the other carrier’s network, there will be no extra costs applied to the call.

Because both carriers use the GSM technology, this arrangement can be made. We have to say that we know what it is like to not have a cellular signal in the aftermath of a hurricane and those in the New York-New Jersey area are lucky to have these two carriers working together for the good of the community. There is no world on how long this arrangement will continue for.

Last year, AT&T offered to buy T-Mobile for $39 billion but regulators objected to the deal and AT&T eventually backed away from the planned acquisition.

source:AT&T, T-Mobile
Press Release

Dallas and Bellevue, Wash. — October 31, 2012 — In the wake of destruction caused by Hurricane Sandy, AT&T and T-Mobile are taking extraordinary measures to make sure our customers can stay in touch.

AT&T and T-Mobile have entered into an agreement to enable roaming on their networks to customers of both companies in the heavily impacted areas and where capacity is available and for subscribers with a compatible device.

AT&T and T-Mobile customers will be able to place calls just as they normally would, but their calls will be carried by whichever network is most operational in their area. This will be seamless for AT&T and T-Mobile customers with no change to their current rate plans or service agreements even if the phone indicates the device is attached to the other carrier’s network.

T-Mobile and AT&T both utilize network technology based on GSM and UMTS standards, which allows for this sharing of voice and data traffic.

Microsoft sued over patents concerning Live Tiles in Windows 8 and Windows Phone

Microsoft sued over patents concerning Live Tiles in Windows 8 and Windows Phone

When we first saw this headline, we had two thoughts in quick succession: 1) Of course someone has a patent on squares and rectangles that deliver information to users!, and 2) Why wasn’t this lawsuit filed against Microsoft when Windows Phone 7 was released? Regardless of the answers to both of those questions, we’ve got ourselves just one more example of how the US patent system is completely borked.

The patent infringement lawsuit comes from SurfCast, an OS development company based in Portland, which owns a patent granted in 2004 pertaining to a “System and method for simultaneous display of multiple information sources.” How’s that for an overly broad patent title? Just from that title alone, it would sound like SurfCast could sue over just about anything from Google News to Hootsuite. Of course, the patent itself isn’t quite as broad, but still not great. It details a GUI that ”organizes content from a variety of information sources into grid of tiles each of which can refresh its content independently of the others.”

Microsoft sued over patents concerning Live Tiles in Windows 8 and Windows Phone

That does sound quite a bit like Live Tiles, although as you can see in the image to the right, which shows SurfCast’s patented system, it doesn’t really look all that much like Live Tiles. But, no surprise here, Microsoft also holds a patent for Live Tiles, which covers “systems and methods for providing a user interface mobile devices enable data and services available through mobile device to be represented as a set of tiles maintained a display space.” Microsoft’s patent was filed back in 2006, but it was rejected in 2009 specifically because of the prior art existing in SurfCast’s patent. Microsoft reapplied and the patent was granted in 2011. (The image associated with Microsoft’s patent is below on the left.)

SurfCast names â€œWindows Phone, Microsoft Surface with the Windows RT Operating System, Microsoft Windows RT, Microsoft Windows 8, Microsoft Windows 8 Pro, and Microsoft Windows 8 Enterprise Operating System” in its suit, but surprisingly leaves out Windows Phone 7/7.5, which has been using this same system for 2 years now, going back to before Microsoft held a patent for the system. We have reached out to SurfCast asking why the lawsuit wasn’t filed until now, given that it seems like the suit would have been much easier to win before Microsoft had the patent approved.

Microsoft sued over patents concerning Live Tiles in Windows 8 and Windows Phone

Beyond the various Microsoft operating systems, SurfCast’s patent could also be applied to any of the now 120,000 apps that have been submitted to the Windows and Windows Phone Stores, because Microsoft details ways for developers to create Live Tiles, which means each app would be infringing when it is submitted to the store.

We have also reached out to Microsoft, and while Microsoft’s PR company has yet to respond to our request, a statement was given to The Next Web saying, â€œWe are confident we will prove to the court that these claims are without merit and that Microsoft has created a unique user experience.”

That’s right, Microsoft is set on going to court in order to prove that its method for displaying information in boxes is “unique” compared to the method of displaying information in boxes that was patented by SurfCast. Once again, bravo US Patent & Trademark Office, you have gone above and beyond in your never-ending quest to destroy the meaning of patents, and make sure all companies get the opportunity to waste money on lawsuits rather than innovation.

Android 4.2 camera with PhotoSphere leaks for Galaxy Nexus

Android 4.2 camera with PhotoSphere leaks for Galaxy Nexus

A new Nexus phone and a new version of Android are on the horizon, so you know what that means: leaked app updates! This time around the big updates to Android 4.2 are with the camera app and the keyboard. We’ve already seen the keyboard, so here’s the camera. As always, you’re on your own if you get into trouble with it.

Unlike the keyboard, which could be installed on any device, this camera app rip is only available for the Galaxy Nexus, and obviously it must be rooted. The update is a ZIP file, which can be flashed via ClockworkMod Recovery. Remember, if you flash the ZIP, it will replace the stock app, so it’s a good idea to make backups before flashing.

The backup may be more necessary with this one than the keyboard, because while we had no issues with the keyboard, the camera hasn’t worked for us yet and force closes when we try to open it. Others have had success with it, but so far, we’re not so lucky. So, if you want to play around with the new PhotoSphere option in the new camera app, proceed with caution.

Android 4.2 gesture keyboard APK leaks out

Android 4.2 gesture keyboard APK leaks out

A new Nexus phone and a new version of Android are on the horizon, so you know what that means: leaked app updates! This time around the big updates to Android 4.2 are with the camera app and the keyboard, and the first of those to leak out is the new gesture keyboard. It doesn’t seem to be the final build though, so as always you’re on your own if you get into trouble with it.

It doesn’t look final for a couple reasons: first, the word display isn’t the same as was shown in the demo of it (embedded below), and also, Google has already tried pulling down links to the APK. Still, it’s almost impossible to completely delete something from the Internet, so the links are still around.

There are two options: an easy to install APK, which won’t work on a stock Android device (aka Nexus), but it will work if you’re using a custom ROM like CyanogenMod or AOKP, or a device with a manufacturer overlay like a Galaxy S III, HTC One X, etc. The other option is a ZIP file for those of you on a rooted stock Android device, which can be flashed via ClockworkMod Recovery.

Remember, if you flash the ZIP, it will replace the stock app, so it’s a good idea to make backups before flashing.

We’ve tried it out, and it does work pretty well. It takes a bit of getting used to because of the word prediction overlay, though. It’s just odd to have words flashing at you as you’re thinking of how to swipe to get the word you want. That option can be turned off in the settings menu if it gets to be too much.

64GB Google Nexus 10 Nah just a mistake

64GB Google Nexus 10? Nah, just a mistake

Samsung Korea might have its ears a little closer to Samsung than others do, considering that the manufacturer is a Korean firm after all. So when the official Korean web site of Samsung started posting about a 64GB version of the recently announced Google Nexus 10, well, why not? Sure, Samsung and Google introduced only 16GB and 32GB variants of the beastly tablet on Monday, but anything’s possible, right?

Samsung built Google Nexus 10

Samsung built Google Nexus 10

Well, in this case, it turns out that Samsung Korea had made a mistake and removed the 64GB version of the Google Nexus 10 from its website. Considering that the tablet doesn’t offer a microSD slot, perhaps a 64GB model should be in the works at Samsung. With a $399 price tag for the 16GB unit and $499 for the 32GB tablet, we would imagine that the pattern would continue and that a 64GB Google Nexus 10 would come in at $599.

The Google Nexus 10 will launch November 13th in the Google Play Store and if you just can’t wait for your tablet to arrive, there are those 5 seconds of of video you can drool over.

The other day, a DLNA certification tipped us again to the GT-N5100, said to be a new Samsung GALAXY Note tablet. The first time we had seen that model number was for a Wi-Fi certification. While the size of the tablet’s screen is unknown, the thinking is that there could be a 7.7 inch screen on the slate in order to compete with the 7.9 inch screen on the Apple iPad mini.

Regardless of the size of the screen, a User Agent Profile revealed that the resolution of the screen will be 1280 x 800 which is the resolution of the 7 inch display on the Google Nexus 7. More speculation has the mystery tablet packing the same quad-core 1.4GHz processor that powers the Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 tablet. And yes, the S Pen is expected to be along for the ride. At this stage in the game, there is no excuse for not having Android 4.1 installed.

Samsung hopes to compete with the full-sized Apple iPad models with the Google Nexus 10 which was introduced on Monday with an incredible 2560 x 1600 10 inch screen packing pixel density of 299ppi. The GT-N5100, as we said, could be aimed squarely at the Apple iPad mini and considering that the latter has just launched, and with the holiday shopping season staring us squarely in the face, we wouldn’t expect the Korean based manufacturer to wait too long to let the cat out of the bag on this one!
