Samsung to sell a record over 60 million smartphones in Q4 2012

Samsung to sell a record over 60 million smartphones in Q4 2012

Samsung broke the smartphone sales record last quarter selling nearly 58 million smartphones, and it is on track to do it again, this time with an even bigger sales number – over 60 million. Despite a huge patent war going on between Samsung and Apple, Samsung manages to retain interest in its flagship Android, the Samsung Galaxy S III, and the Galaxy Note II is also gaining more momentum than expect, all of which will contribute to sales of over 60 million Samsung smartphones in Q4 2012, according to analysis from investment bank UBS.

“The Galaxy Note 2 has shipped 3 million units in its first five weeks of sales, with sell-through strong in Asia and Europe, and the U.S. gathering pace post-launch,” UBS analyst Nicolas Gaudois said. “We hence forecast 7 million Galaxy Note 2, compared to our initial expectation of 5 million for the fourth quarter.”

Such solid sales of Samsung’s phablet might mean that the company has managed to offset the impact of the launch of the new iPhone 5. And reality is, those after all are very different devices.

And when it comes to the Samsung Galaxy S III, it is probably the biggest driver of Samsung’s profits and sales. In October alone, Samsung is reported to have sold more than 5.5 million S IIIs.

“We see a limited ramp-down, if any at all, for the Galaxy S3, and we feel comfortable with our 15 million estimate for the fourth quarter of 2012,” Gaudois added.

On the other side of the fence, Apple has also struggled with huge demand for its iPhone 5, so it seems that Samsung and Apple together will dominate the industry in Q4 2012.
